Kenzie Sampson
Bio
I am an outsider artist who has returned to my hometown Gisborne, Te Tairāwhiti. Through my art I explore concepts around the veil between spiritual realms, death as a feminine energy, eco-feminism and lost voices. I’m interested in the importance of connecting with our past ancestors and surrounding spirits through forgotten learnings, lost language and rituals, touching into early cultural beliefs to reclaim our connection to nature and life. I am particularly taken with the conversation around death, and the many goddesses of death that connect us back to a more symbiotic way of living with the land and the spirit world.
My works are memento mori’s, a reminder to live our lives well so we can be collected by Hine-nui-te-pō at the end with a sense of pride for how we lived.
I paint intuitively building layers through a range of mediums, keeping areas unworked, scraping back layers, washing over more. I work in a way that intentionally creates room for irregularities which guide my way through the piece. Each artwork is a journey and I leave the journey visible to the viewer.

Something about revisiting and listening to our ancestors learnings around how to best protect and preserve our surrounding land and eco system, soil, rivers etc. Knowledge that has been overlooked for development - forestry etc. The need to become more in tune with nature again. Move away from capitalism and return to respecting our land etc...
