Jo Smith

Bio

Jo Smith is a Gisborne-based hairdresser with a crafty streak that spills into all parts of her life. When she’s not behind the salon chair, she’s sewing, knitting, embroidering, or bringing to life the imaginative requests of her daughters. Jo’s hands are always busy making — whether it’s practical, playful, or deeply expressive.

Description

For Mōwai, Jo has turned her skills to wearable arts, creating bold statement pieces that speak to the lived challenges of our region. Each work draws on everyday resilience and frustration, transformed into art: one explores the ongoing roading issues that leave communities isolated, another channels the anxiety of relentless rain, and a third reflects the struggle of getting to pharmacies and accessing medication and health services in times of disruption.

Her works are a celebration of resourcefulness and craft, weaving humour and seriousness together to show how creativity can give form to collective experiences.

The opportunity you have in life and business is to make choices that bring your WHY to life.

For me, my WHY is to create connection. To create meaningful and emotional connections with your communities, tribe, clients, business partners, customer. My job is to help you find it, clarify it, amplify it, and design it.

With over 15+ years of experience in graphic design specialising in brand development across digital media & print, my skill set is not just that of your average creative... on a typical day I can identify insights, come up with ideas, get excited about strategic marketing, execute outstanding campaigns, craft identities, websites, and everything in-between. Working on award-winning creative campaigns while delivering high-quality work with attention to detail is all in a days job… Coffee anyone?
