Renee Raroa
Bio
Renee Raroa is a community connector and creative force whose work sits at the intersection of knowledge, relationships, and imagination. Known for her leadership across Tairāwhiti—through roles with Toha Foundry, Tāiki E!, and numerous boards and initiatives—Renee brings deep experience in community science, regenerative practice, and impact-driven events.
For Mōwai, Renee turns her hand to an alchemical form of storytelling through potions: drinks designed as experiences that embody the research themes and emotions of the project. Her creations invite people not just to taste, but to feel—transforming ideas of resilience, wellbeing, and whenua into sensory encounters. Each potion becomes a conversation starter, a playful act of care, and a reminder that knowledge can be shared in ways that nourish both body and spirit.
Description
Renee Raroa brings an alchemy of flavour and storytelling to Mōwai through her signature “potions” – drinks designed not just to be tasted, but to be experienced. Each creation is layered with ritual: the clink of wooden cups, the pour of honey whiskey, the stirring of spices and citrus, and the sharing of jewel-toned concoctions. Renee transforms drinks into ceremony, inviting people to slow down, engage their senses, and connect with one another and the research report ‘Kua Huri te Tai, Kua Pari te Tai Aroha’. Her potions echo the kaupapa of Mōwai – grounding in place, memory, and collective care – while turning each sip into a performance of aroha, playfulness, and creativity.
